A Brief History of Harley-Davidson® Motorcycles

The Harley-Davidson name is iconic in the motorcycle industry for their quality and innovation. When you’re on the hunt for your new bike, it might be beneficial to know a little more about its history. 

Getting Their Start

Two childhood friends founded the company in 1903. William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson created single-cylinder engines that improved the pedal bike designs. They continued to tweak their design until it felt powerful enough to conquer the hills in Milwaukee. 
The team released their first motorcycle in 1904 and continued to make innovations. Eventually they were able to start their first factory, allowing more models to be built. Within the first seven years of the company, the engine power of their motorcycles doubled from their first design, leading them to become popular on the racetrack. 

Building the Reputation 

As the company continued to expand and gain traction within different facets of the industry, they found themselves being contracted to build 20,000 bikes for WWI. This contract helped them become the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world by the end of 1920.
Although the Great Depression caused some hardship for the brand and everyone, they were able to stay afloat. Their reputation landed them a second military contract to build 90,000 bikes during WWII.
